Flood Defence Site, UK

Flood defense defence site specifies retrofit Fibrelite covers for flood defense defence door system

Project Overview

On this flood defense defence site, the previously installed steel access plates which were used to securely stow away flood defense defence doors had deformed which, together with their weight, made them challenging to remove and replace. Given that ease of access during emergency flood events was of critical importance, the site approached Fibrelite for a long-term retrofit replacement.

Key Requirements

  • Replacement trench covers were required to include an integrated restraining mechanism to prevent unauthorized unauthorised removal (which could result in a trip hazard).
  • Covers were required to be color colour coded with black/yellow chevrons to highlight/identify potential hazards to both onsite staff and the general public.
  • D400 load rated covers to withstand the regularly heavy goods vehicles traffic.
  • A retrofit solution which could be fit to the existing aperture, minimizing minimising downtime.

The Fibrelite Solution

  • The Fibrelite Technical team custom designed and manufactured a retrofit replacement FRP GRP composite trench access covering solution which fit directly into the existing aperture.
  • Trench covers were custom manufactured to include restraining bolts to secure the barriers from unauthorized unauthorised access.
  • The covers were color colour coded using black and yellow pigments to highlight/identify potential hazards to both onsite staff and the general public.
  • The retrofit covering arrangement was manufactured to a D400 load rating as per client specification, due to the frequent HGV traffic.
  • Trench covers will not deflect under sustained heavy loads consistent with D400 load rating.
  • The client can now gain access to the flood defense defence doors quickly and easily in an emergency as the new lightweight Fibrelite trench covers can be removed and replaced manually safely and easily using the ergonomically designed FL7 lifting handles.
  • Corrosion-resistant: unaffected by water, underground gasses and most chemicals. Anti-skid/slip surface.
