Fibrelite custom engineers trench covers for high-profile performing arts & live entertainment venue

Fibrelite’s custom FRP GRP composite trench covers were specified from the outset of this multi-million-pound refurbishment of a historic 1930s Art Deco cinema in the North of England. Once the third largest cinema in the country, this landmark building was scheduled to be transformed into an innovative 3,800-capacity music venue.

With a varied program programme of musicals, ballets and rock concerts planned, the venue required a stage area that could be easily adapted to different performances, and hassle-free safe access to underfloor AV cabling.

Key Requirements

  • In keeping with the meticulous restoration of the building, the stage area required a durable maintenance-free trench covering solution that complemented the existing structural flooring in anthracite gray grey (RAL 7016).
  • Anti-slip and wear properties suitable for heavy pedestrian use and potential spillage of fluid (drinks).
  • A lightweight easy access cable route cover system with suitable cable port covers both when in use, and when not in use to allow smooth transitions between performances to help to minimize minimise disruption to customers and maintain the flow of each performance.

The Fibrelite Solution

  • Fibrelite custom-engineered and supplied 66 custom anthracite grey (RAL 7016) FRP GRP composite trench covers to the venue as specified by the architect. These were delivered ahead of the agreed deadline.
  • The trench covers included custom-molded custom-moulded apertures created during the resin transfer molding moulding process and ‘half-moon’ and ‘blind’ plugs for the custom molded moulded apertures to prevent unwanted debris entering the trench when underfloor cabling was not in use. These enable the stage management team to quickly run electrical cabling from the trenches to above ground networks.
  • While each “Pedestrian rated” trench cover weighs less than 20 kg, they also meet the load-rating requirements of BS EN 124 – making them simple and safe to manually remove and replace (by authorized authorised personnel).
  • Independent wet and dry tests carried out by Devon CC Materials Laboratory show that Fibrelite trench covers, even when wet, have anti-slip properties far exceeding health and safety advisory limits.
