Cool to the touch FRP covers for steam systems
District energy systems, which supply steam heating in the downtown areas of cities and on university and college campuses, are increasingly concerned about the hazards of hot cast iron manhole covers. This concern is especially prevalent in warmer weather when pedestrians and students are wearing less protective footwear (e.g. sandals or flip flops). Fibrelite’s cool-to-touch FRP composite manhole and modular trench covers were originally specified by municipal district energy systems in Boston and Philadelphia due to these concerns. Many other district energy systems and universities in both the United States and Canada have since followed suit.
Utilizing specialty resins and a proprietary composite design, Fibrelite steam covers have a 4 to 1 heat gradient, meaning that even if the underside of the cover reaches 212°F the top surface of the cover is only 77°F. Fibrelite’s FRP composite steam covers have been tested to temperatures up to 400°F while still maintaining their cool-to-touch properties and ability to support vehicular loads.
Fibrelite steam covers have the same lightweight, strong, maintenance-free properties as all Fibrelite covers as well as greater resistance to chemicals. Independent wet and dry tests showed that Fibrelite manhole and trench covers – even when wet – have anti-slip/skid properties exceeding health and safety advisory limits.
Any of Fibrelite’s line of composite steam covers can include molded lettering that can be used to identify it as a steam vault and/or the manhole’s location or identification information.
