Oliwskie Quay, Port of Gdańsk, Poland

Fibrelite custom designs and manufactures lightweight E600 composite covers for Port of Gdańsk quay extension

Project Overview

To cope with higher demand and increasingly larger container ships, the Port of Gdańsk invested in the extension and modernization modernisation of the Oliwskie Quay, with a total length of extension and modernization modernisation of 1,200 meters. metres.
The works carried out at the port involved the deepening and strengthening of the bottom of the port and reconstruction of the onshore part of the quay along with the entire infrastructure and utilities (sanitary, electricity, telecommunication networks, railway).
As part of this development, a lightweight heavy-duty access covering solution was required to protect and provide access to below ground utilities. Following the installation of Fibrelite covers previously at Container Terminal DCT Gdańsk, Fibrelite’s Polish distributor Corrimex was the first port of call.

Fibrelite covers were custom designed and manufactured to fit directly into existing apertures, minimizing minimising installation time

Key Requirements

  • Trench covers had to be very durable to withstand the highly demanding environment.
  • Covers needed to be able to withstand heavy duty equipment (up to E600/60-ton) E600/60-tonne) and the atmosphere of Poland’s largest port.
  • Covers also had to reduce any potential manual handling issues when quick access was required to the electrical cables, water chambers, and drainage beneath.
Designed as a fit and forget product, all Fibrelite FRP GRP composite covers are maintenance free corrosion-resistant and ultra-durable
The specified Fibrelite heavy-duty trench covers have a E600 (60-ton) (60-tonne) load rating designed for ports applications
All Fibrelite trench covers can be safely removed and replaced by two people using the FL7 lifting handles due to their high strength-to-weight ratio

The Fibrelite Solution

  • Fibrelite, together with their Polish distributor Corrimex designed and manufactured bespoke FRP GRP composite trench covers to fit directly into the pits that had been designed and made on site, making installation quick and easy, and minimizing minimising disruption to the ongoing construction.
  • All Fibrelite trench covers can be safely removed and replaced by two people using the FL7 lifting handles due to their high strength-to-weight ratio.
  • The heavy duty, corrosion-resistant trench covers can now be removed and replaced quickly and safely, minimizing minimising disruption.
  • Fibrelite covers provide a walking and driving surface which, even when wet, has anti-slip/skid properties far exceeding health and safety advisory limits.
  • The specified Fibrelite heavy-duty trench covers have an E600 (60-ton) (60-tonne) load rating enabling them to withstand heavy loads whilst still being able to outperform concrete on a long-term basis.
  • Designed as a fit and forget product, all Fibrelite FRP GRP composite covers are maintenance free corrosion-resistant and ultra-durable.
  • Fibrelite designed, manufactured, and delivered the covers within the specified build schedule.

“As of today, I can say that the covers have met the expectations in terms of ease of installation and lightness of use. The lightweight [property] of the covers and the ease of carrying them with the use of special handles make the work of fitters and operators much easier. I would definitely use composite covers offered by Fibrelite & Corrimex on other construction sites and projects, because it is a very convenient solution”
